Increased research and product safety were the themes of a speech given by Paul Binford at the 2010 American Ostrich Association Annual Meeting in Nashville, TN on February 13th.  Binford was asked to speak as a non-member specialty oils expert with over 16 years experience in emu oil.  The emu and ostrich are similar birds from the same Ratite Family.  They have similar features, leather, and meat, but also share similarities in the cholesterol lowering properties of their oil.  Through ongoing research begun more than 10 years ago, emu oil is quickly growing a solid reputation in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries for its anti-inflammatory and penetrative properties.  Ostrich oil, on the other hand, is largely unknown.

“More research is needed”, says Paul Binford, owner and operator of LB Processors, with additional research the properties of ostrich oil can be further understood.  Ostrich oil does not have the same anti-inflammatory properties as emu oil. However, like emu oil, ostrich oil is a good source of Omega 3, which is known to lower triglycerides and increase HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol).  Studies also show that Omega 3 acts as an anticoagulant in the blood stream and can lower high blood pressure. These properties could open a door for more cardiac research.

The first priority of a fledgling ostrich oil industry must be product safety.  Guidelines should be created to regulate the presence of possible contaminants in order to produce a measurable, stable, safe, and consistent product.  In order to meet these guidelines the oil must be subjected to a refining process.  Paul Binford, through his experience with emu oil, suggests a physical refining process at a high temperature for a specific amount of time.  This ensures that any contaminants have been destroyed, while maintaining an all-natural, chemical-free refining process.

With the dedication from the industry to produce refined ostrich oil, and the research to manufacture a market, ostrich oil could be a lucrative method of expansion for the ostrich industry.
